I just got into using homebrewed hair products a few months ago. One of the most popular products I see being mentioned online is Blackship, and having tried it, I agree that it is one of the best hair products for me out there. Let me tell you why.
Cost
$16 USD from most online retailers, $23SGD from Shopee (With Coupon). Quite affordable compared to most other products on the market.
Packaging
4 Oz glass jar. Not much to say here, but all in all pretty simple.
Scent
It's described as a Dark Citrus Rose. I hated the scent at first - it has a pungent spicy smell that I can't exactly describe. Thankfully, it becomes less noticeable throughout the day. After using it for more than a month, the smell kinda grew on me and I now find it generally pleasant, but still inferior to other products out there.
Consistency
Thick and pastey. Scoops out easy. Kinda reminds me of playdoh.
Application
Breaks down in the palms effortlessly. Spreads evenly in the hair with no tugging and pulling. Definitely very simple go use.
Texture
Matte, low shine. Quite similar to the texture of a clay.
Hold
Unlike what most online reviewers will tell you, this is really just a firm hold, not a strong heavy hold. It's strong enough for most combover/pompadour hairstyles, but you might struggle to maintain a tall pomp throughout the day.
Endurance
The best of any product I have tried so far. Most products "disappear" from my hair after a whole day of use. This never happens with blackship, most of what you applied in the morning remains on the hair. My hair was kept in shape till the end of the day; however, the top of my hair sagged due to the weight of the product.
So I decided to put it to the test. I used Blackship during my Hong Kong Trip, which can be as hot as Singapore. Although I did say the endurance for Blackship is exceptional, I sat on so many roller coasters in Ocean Park and went to Victoria Harbour (which is very windy). No hair product would have survived that. This brings me to the next point: Restyling.
Restyling
Because the product stays in your hair all day, restyling is actually possible. I am able to restyle my hair similar to how it was in the morning. No additional product needed.
Wash-ability
Washes out in one go with most shampoos. Doesn't wash out well with just water.
Verdict
This is probably the best hair product I've tried so far, simply because it is the only thing that keeps my hair styled throughout the day. I really like the endurance of this product in our Singaporean climate. The only thing I do not like is the scent.
All in all, this product is really easy to use and I will definitely use it on the daily.
